HTRC Web Traffic Visualization
Figure 1. A subset of the visualization showing quarterly web traffic, 2010 - 2014. The image appears distorted because it has been warped for proper presentation on a spherical display.

The Advanced Visualization Lab collaborated with the HathiTrust Research Center to create visualizations for the Science on a Sphere display to be showcased at the Supercomputing 2014 conference. Three visualizations were produced: (1) a map of HathiTrust UnCamp participants overlaid with photographs from the event, (2) a map showing the publication countries of a subset of HathiTrust texts, and (3) an animated map showing web traffic to hathitrust.org over time.

The HathiTrust visualizations were displayed in the Indiana University booth at the Supercomputing 2014 conference, and continue to be showcased on the Science on a Sphere in the lobby of the Cyberinfrastructure Building (CIB) at IU Bloomington. These visualizations included the first public appearance of Google Analytics data on the Science on a Sphere display and used a workflow developed by the AVL, which can be easily reproduced for others inside and outside Indiana University.

AVL staff gathered data via Google Analytics and spreadsheets, and utilized new and existing workflows. Software tools included Python, Google Analytics API, Processing, GIMP, and Photoshop.

IU’s Advanced Visualization Lab is funded through the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology; is a unit of UITS Research Technologies; and is affiliated with the Pervasive Technology Institute.
